29 Gallon Community Tank Growout Thread

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Guppies tend to need more females than males so the one doesn’t get harassed to much (like other livebearers). I think that the serious inbreeding resulted in certain strains that are just not hardy and don’t live well. Some are better than others. I think that hard, alkaline water helps as well and even a bit of salt is good.
For neons watch out for neon tetra disease, it wrecks tetra schools.
Thanks for this information! I got them for 8 bucks as a pair. The male looks like he has a dumbotail. He is all black. The people there called him a "Black Moscow Guppy". The female almost looks like a Norman's Lampeye Killifish with labyrinth-like patterns fading in the midsection and getting more black towards the back.

I've heard of Neon Tetra disease. I think those would be the second most likely she would kill.

Shrimp is controlling the algae now. I picked up 3 Amano's. They're already eating! Bad news is that the Platys are outcompeting EVERYTHING for food. The algae wafers are getting picked on, and everything. So I started to drop food in the Cory's hide so they get food, and feeding the platys on one side of the tank and the others on the other. The Betta is smart, she goes to the opposite side.

My sister took out the decorations because of the diatoms, and apparently she saw a little splotch of BBA. Well, she didn’t check the decoration, so now 2 out of 3 shrimp are dead. I saw a single Platy Baby, and hopefully more to come. Would live plants work in here, and if so, what kind?

Any of the simple ones like Java or Anubias should do fine.

So, I finally got around to planting the tank. I talked to Sam at Aquarium Fish Depot, and he said the reason you can't see a few inches into the tank is because of the StingRay light. It promotes floating algae growth.

I got:

Java Fern 'Trident'
Java Fern
Anubias 'Barteroi'
and some red plant that I can't think of the name.

I also got a special algae treater for my other tank that I will use on this tank later. It's 180 dollars.
