29 gallon first SW set up!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I stated with a Damsel , clown, royal gamma w/ no issues wasn't til I added a less aggressive similair looking fish - blue hippo tang - that the damsels true colors flew. He reminds me of SA Salvinis and mbuna Auratus, same attitude, very similair in behavior - very smart as well. I've tried gettin' im out but no dice - he knows - right into the rockwork he goes.

Someday I'll get a Dwarf Flame angel and/or a coral beauty angel but my tangs gotta lot of growin' to do before theres multiple aggressive fish in the tank. Also a lil' leary of the angels cause they might pick at the corals which are down right pricey for as small as they are - gotta give them time too.

If I was gonna do an FOWLR it'd be at least a 125 long if not another 180 and it's inhabitants would be Triggers, Snowflake Eel, Cow fish, and a Harliquin Tusk.

I think I'm going to skip the damsel and just use the clown as my starter...I got another 2lbs of live rock and that maxijet 400 rotation pump today, it seems to be working out well, not too much movement (sand isn't getting blown away, and neither are the urchin skeletons). I wanted to set up a bigger SW tank, but seeing as I'm still living with the rents and am on a college budget, a 29 seemed like a good place to start.

I'm in a similar situation. I live on my own, going to college so funds aren't always available. I prob have $1300 in my 29g and its nowhere near completion, so believe me you'll have enough stuff to spend money on :nilly:

haha yeah...i really wanted to get the 55 going but doing the math at just filling the damn thing with live rock was a very scary number. i'm fortunate enough to have parents that saved for my education, so my money covers my personal bills, and then of course my tanks =]

Lol this is random, how much of a discount do you get working at petco?....i should apply to one :)

Also tank looks very nice...what is that brown thing that looks so cool!

I dont work at petco, I know a couple of people that do and I think there's is 15%. I work at an independent store...gives us more flexibility and we can get better product without any type of corporate controlling our distributors. And as far as "the brown thing" if your refering to the piece of rock in the middle, its just a dead coral that was in with our fiji live rock, not exactly sure what kind.

heres some shots with the new pump and a few more pieces of live rock. Thinking I'll add the clown in about a week 1/2 to 2 weeks. Until then...just gunna let whats there sit, maybe add a few more pieces of rock here and there.

I hope you're cycling this tank for a while before adding your stock. Takes a good 4 to 6 weeks to cycle a SW tank properly.
As for damsels, if they got bigger, they would be the biggest bad asses in the ocean! :D Pound for pound, one of the toughest fish out there. When i cleaned my tank, every other fish ran away, my damsels would come out and attack my scraper!

haha...exactly why I decided to skip the damsel. The rest of my stock plans are semi-agressive so I thought they'd be alright but I don't want to deal with any problems haha. As far as cycling, yes I am, its been up just short of a week and I plan to wait 2 more before adding the clown.

I can't stress enough to be patient. Don't stick firm to your timetable of two weeks. Check your water parameters to make sure the tank is completely cycled. SW fish tend to be more delicate than FW so it won't take much for them to die.
And remember, Clown Fish are members of the damsel family! They can be just as mean as regular damsels.
