So I am trying to move my wife's 29 gallon tank in the planted direction. I am not doing CO2 and running a Emperor 400 on it. My question is, is a Marineland LED Double Bright Lighting System going to be bright enough for the tank? Since this is my first time trying plants, I don't want to buy a light only to have to buy new ones anytime soon because they just weren't bright enough.

I tend to think not, as I was going to buy one and then i read the review that they were only suited for low light plants and more demanding plants would need the reef capable LED lighting

What plants do you want? Get some LL plants and you should be good.

To be honest, I don't know what plant I'm going to throw in there. Right now there is duck weed (emphasis on weed) and some of those bulbs you buy at petsmart that are guaranteed to grow... I should have saved the receipt. And there are a couple of Anubias in there also. I am mainly looking for a decent fixture that is under $150 as I don't want to spend too much on the tank because we have our first kid on the way.

I'm not sold on Marineland LED lighting. There are only so many hours of life in the fixture. Having to replace the entire fixture every 3-4 years can be expensive.

Depends how much your price range is. Btw do a DIY co2, it is easy and will lead to great results!

I'm looking to spend only around $150. As for the DIY CO2, I am thinking about that.

I've decided to use a fixture I already have. It hold 2 28 watt power compact bulbs and a 17 watt florescent. What type of bulb would be good for me. By type, I mean 50/50, actinic etc...
