29 Gallon Saltwater - Please help

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Do a lot of research, it's part of the hobby. I have about 5 books about setup and running. Plus i spent months on the computer googling this and that, read every article about saltwater fish on peteducation.com, and even then i felt like i didn't know what i was doing. All i can say is it's a learning experience.

Heres the list anyways:
Filter/sump
Protein Skimmer: takes unwanted bacteria out of the water before it can become a problem.
Refratometer/ Hydrometer: Measures salinity/Specific Gravity.
Compact Florescent/T5/Metal Halide lighting: Higher spectrum for corals, if you just have fish you don't need complected lighting.
Heater/Chiller
LiveRock
Saltwater Test Kit
Salt
Understanding of Nitrogen Cycle.
Have Researched and understand the cost and setup of Marine Aquariums.
Understanding of the environmental impact of the hobby, and aquaculture.

Chillers are expensive and really unnecessary unless you have something like Metal Halides heating your tank, or if your looking into colder water species, or if your just in a hot climate. I'm about 5 degrees short of needing a chiller during summer.

As for the skimmer, i'm not to clear about. I need to get a new one so i'm probably just going to by the best one in my price range which is the Marineland one. I've had nothing bad happen to my Marineland products so i feel good getting a skimmer. Are there better ones out there? probably. but they are also probably more expensive.

Don't know much about Aqueon, but i think they have some other bio material other than a bio wheel which should be fine.

Just looked it up, should be fine. Just keep it clean.

Hey guys i found this "Bio System Power Filter & Oxy Surface Skimmer"
at http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=3578+3579+16729&pcatid=16729

It has an amazing price and the reviews are good, what do you guys think of me getting this as a filter+skimmer?! i could even get the 45gallon one to be save, seeing as its more powerful, then all i need is a powerhead and refractormeter and ill be set for under $150! What do you guys think??
