Fishman Dave Fishman Dave do the hemibagrus really get to 8 inches? I have one myself and am curious if they get that big or a bit smaller in the home tank.

Good question. Never had an eight inch Olyroides myself or seen one eight inches - only seen six inch. Having said that, I have a filamentus that has also been six inches for the last six months and he's supposed to get to 19 and an albino nemurus which has maxed out at nine inches and he is supposed to get to 26" (although I believe him to be what was known as docmak)
The problem with some of the hemibagrus is that they are really hard to correctly identify, especially when young. Although, Olyroides is one of the easier ones to id due to the adipose fin.
I would suggest ( and it's only my guess) that males may be slightly smaller and thinner than females, so you could well have a male.
If course there are some hemibagrus that get much bigger than eight inches and you don't want to accidentally get one of those for a 29g.

I would go with either an African butterfly fish or one of the smaller species of African bush fish like the ornate ctenopoma. Smaller spiny eels are a great option if you have a sand bottom.

First off, you can get one dwarf pike, if you have two they'll likely kill eachother unless you manage to get a pair that won't kill eachother.
As for predators for a 29, you can get a figure 8 puffer or green spotted puffer, a Congo puffer (ambush), an African butterfly fish, or an African leaf fish
I would stay away from green spotted puffers. They need start their life in slight brackish and eventually go full marine.
Red eye puffers would be great in a 29.

I am going to buy a 29 gallon tank and I want a bottom dweller tank, a medium-sized solitary cichlid or a predator tank. What fish should I buy?
A red eye puffer would be an awesome predator for a 29
They’re small but pack a punch and have great attitude
Here’s mine
