As far as discus, I have successfully put pair discus in 30gal just fine. Again just my experience.

You should but albino senegulas bichirs. Their the absolute best fish in a medium tank. they are beautiful, smart, hardy and they don't grow that big. They grow to a max of 8 inches. i have 2 in my 29gal tank which i hand feed. The great thing about them is that they have magnificent ruby eyes on a slender white body. the best thing about them is that they are extremely hardy. My 2 bichir were half dead a few weeks ago but now, they were even better then they ever were!! Hope it helps!!
