Quite a few, probably. Change the water every few days and you shouldn't have problems.
It's a better idea to buy around 6 at a time, because if they've got ich or whatever it's going to be a lot worse with twice as many fish in the tank.

Do make sure you quarantine them for 3-4 weeks. The longer, the better. Patience will pay off as you will not have to deal with future issues frequently in your larger tank.
