Since I've setup my tank at our new house my 7 year old has really become interested in fish and wants his own tank...I have a 29 gallon and stand in my garage so basically I'd just need a filter and heater to get him going with his own tank.

Question is what do you guys think would be good stock since it's a small tank? I was thinking maybe a pair of Firemouth's?

Also now that I think about a breeding pair of something would be ideal since I could feed the fry to the fish in my tank! :)

If you want cichlids I would do rams or 1 smaller cichlid in the 4-6" range with 3-5 random darters.

I personally have a bolivian ram with 5 cherry barbs and 3-5 otos in my planted tank.

It's always a fun tank to watch, lots of "playing"

Not a new world cichlid, but neolamp. ocellatus are incredible little shelldwellers, your kid will enjoy watching their antics

Thanks for the info/suggestions so far.

I currently have an AC 110 and Whisper 60 on my 55 gallon and was thinking I may just move the Whisper 60 over to his 29 gallon and pick up a new 2nd filter for mine. What do you guys think I should get? I don't really have the money for a canister right now unless it's one of those API Nexx's, but I haven't seen many good reviews on it so I think I'd like to just stay with 2 hob's for now.

Ended up getting him a Firemouth that's about 1" and a German Blue Ram that's about 1.5"...see how it goes. Squashes my idea for breeding, but it's what he liked.

Now I just need to decide on a 2nd filter for my tank.
