Hey guys,

That amazing deal at petsmart on eheim 2028's has been eating away at me since yesterday. Quick question...on a 125 gallon with a decent bioload (jumbo mating pair of V. synspilum cichlids), which is already running 2 AC110's...would you go with 2 Eheim 2028's or one Fluval FX5. I figured the Eheim's are better for bio...but the lower flow rate I guess makes them worse for mechanical. The FX5 it seems does an ok job with bio and the massive flowrate makes it a great junk vacuum.

Do one of these setups seem to you guys to be the far-and-away clear choice?

Thanks for the opinions.

I would go with the pair of eheims, though I am a fan of redundant filtration.

the two 2028s will cost you $280 before shipping and tax....
you can score a fx5 off ebay for (ive been watching EVERY one thats been listed for the last 2 months) anywhere between $178 shipped to $250 shipped.. average is $200-$220 shipped...

just figured id throw that out there

Wow...I thought the responses would overwhelmingly favor the FX5, seeing as how much love that can gets on MFK. Interesting...Either way, I'm just finding out that the 2028 is just a fancier 2217 (similar flow rate) with media baskets and some features that increase convenience/ease of priming and cleaning. Seeing that I can still get a 2217 for less than $150, I'm inclined to think that the 2028's, while a good deal, may not be ALL they are cracked up to be. Some people are reporting that they don't quite have enough oomph to filter 75g on their own, though they are rated to 158g...the FX5 may have issues, but it seems it has that massive mechanical filtration capacity I'm looking for, while retaining some good bio.

Thanks for that suggestion about Ebay! If it all pans out, ideally I could get one FX5 and one 2028 (for the bio) and still not pay too much more than the 2 2028's. Thanks for the lightning fast responses guys!

I have the FX5 and I love it!!!!!! It has been running a little over a year, and I have not had one single issue with it. I have it jammed with 2l of substrate pro, two boxes of biomax, blue filter sleeve. I also have 2 magnum 350s running filled with ceramic rings. I have some messy oscars, two festae, a GT and a common pleco. My params are point on, and every one is healthy and happy. I have owned any eheims, but with the right setup, any combination of filtration will reward you with great results. It's all on what you want, and what you want to brag about what filtration you are running.

i would go with 2x 2028. i have one on my 125 along with 2 ac110s and i'm loving it. it works great, and i only clean it once a year. i'm looking forward to getting another one, now that they are only going for 150 on petsmart!

Petsmart you can get the eheim 149.99 each

http://www.petsmart.com/product/inde...53132#prodTab1

Complete with media and shipping would be 6 bucks for both filters.

Don't forget the FX5 comes with no media so that will need to be figured into the cost.

I have a 72g running a Eheim 2236 and a 220g running an FX5. The mechical on the eheim is very poor and the FX5 has considerabily more room for bio media. The ehiem in the quietist filter I've never heard and easy to clean but I wont get another if I can get an FX5.

i need to stop doing math in my head

2 2028 will run you $312 not $280 (this does not account for tax)

packing a fx5 full of scrubbies (open scrubbies to fill misses space) as well as filterfloss will cost you another $20 or so.. so even on the highside of ebay thats $240 for the fx5...

either way... its pretty much more of a "what do you want to do" sorta deal... i personaly want an fx5 just so i can say that i have one... however for less than $100 i can build a sump that will do just as well of a job with no down side...
