SLIM,
very nice...:headbang2
I feel you on maintenance in the living room and all, maybe an adjacent furniture quality cabinet, that can house the serviceable part of the filtration.

The other option would be to run the plumbing in-wall like you were thinking, then run a medium size bead filter and an efficient pump...

Bead filters are excellent and closed loop as well...then you'd have the power back-flush option for cleaning.

Seeings how you have a master plumber in-house you could run it in the basment and have the backflush plumbing dump to brown water or out into the landscape. It might be worth a look ;)

i have no first hand experience but from the looks of it. it wouldn't be a bad idea to plumb in a extra empty tank into the sump just in case it does get flooded.

How about this idea.

Run individual sumps on both tanks. Plumb a common drain line, a supply line and setup auto water changing systems for both tanks, assuming they're on the same vertical line or near it'd be essentially the same job as trying to plumb both to a common sump but now you hardly have maintenance and don't have to worry as much about flooding since each tank would have its own drain. While you're at it you can setup drains in your fishroom to simplify maintenance even more.

It would prolly cost more but the outcome is the same and you'd save time on waterchanges. You mentioned your father was a plumber so this setup would be much more familiar to him and most of the parts aren't anything specific to fishkeeping.
