Ok so I scaled it down to an 8'x4'x4' tank. I wanted to go HUGE but thought, first time building I should try smaller first.

My question is will 3/4th's inch plywood be thick enough for this? thanks

haha, Id love to do that...swim in it. As for width, the fish Ive got. Ive got mainly catfish and want something that will be good for awhile untill I see that I can do this and then go bigger.

I didnt want to do much cutting, so I figured the sheets are already 8x4's and wanted to keep it that. But what about the glass peice? how thick will that have to be?

Im so slow... I didnt mean the width, I dont know though. I might go 3' or so. I just didnt want to do much cutting, but I wouldnt mind, 4 foot is kind of tall:screwy:

jem454 has a 4 foot tall tank that is using 1/2" tempered glass. It had it's 1 year B-Day a couple weeks ago. I would go with 3/4" tempered just to be safe, but the cost grows by hundreds when switching from 1/2 to 3/4 tempered.

With plate glass I would probably do 1" for 4' deep.

that should be better if its 3'...if you make it bigger by that i mean taller...you have to deal with alot of pressure being you tank is going to be 8'x3'x3' like mines...and stick with 3/4 glass just to be on the safe side....unless you also wouldnt mind all whole floor filled with water and glass shards on the floor which might be very invisible under the water...

not thick enough even at 3ft. its still risky IMO....

Man go 4'! Besides no one ever said you had to fill it up that high. I wanna do a 4'-5' high and leave it 1' from the top so A. fish jump they have 12" of room and B. Waves like the ocean!

How do people maintain deeper tanks. At 4 feet you cannot reach the bottom unless you are around 8 feet tall. With it being 4 feet wide you would never be able to reach the middle, bottom parts of the tank unless you get into it.

Set it up right and no need to maintain. I got a boat load of fish in my tank and gravel, havent done a gravel vac since summer. Everytime I check its clean.

And 8 feet tall!?! na put on your snorkel and say hello :)
