well guys im in the last stages of my plywood build, water goes in tomorrow. So im planning on building a 3 drawer trickle filter, iv bought the tank overflows, elbows and pipe (all from tmc, tropical, marine ? in manchester) iv also got the 3 drawer system and 35g tub, my tank is 125g uk or 160ish us. 2 overflows at 1 inch and also the pump is 5000 liters an hour i think thats 1100g uk. After reading all the great threads on here im confident on the build. Anyway to get to the point im just unsure on two things, 1= my tank is near a window so will direct light have an adverse affect on my fiter media and 2= im not sure what media to put in the drawers? i was thinking drawer 1 a sponge of some kind and floss over the top as mechanical, drawer 2 bio balls (not submerged) and 3= pot scubbers(part submerged)..any advice would be great and will post pics when get started a week today....many thanks

The filter media sounds pretty good to me. As for the window situation the uv ligt coming from your window might kill some of the beneficial bacteria. Also you might get a little hair algae growth on your filter media

filter media is all good. wondering since you have 2 overflows if you did dual-trickle-towers? makes more sense if you can fit two sets of drawers in your sump.

iv not actually bought the drawers yet, i was going to do just one set but did think about 2, my only concern was that i know with a trickle tower it should be a water turnover of at least 5 times so if it was going through two sets of drawers would i need to add a filter with a higher turnover of water to get the wtaer being filtered at least 5 times through the both sets of drawers.

I think you meant pump. If your overflows are large enough to handle it, by all means upgrade/get another pump. And turnover rate doesnt have to be at least 5x. Some people here have 2~3x turnover rate and their BB are fine.

thanks, yes i did mean pump....i might try the 2 sets of drawers idea as i can get them cheap at the moment, going to get all the rest of the stuff tomorrow

well i got everything else i needed to start work on the filter, just one question i came across something today called k1 filter media? has anybody used it and is it any good cos the amount that was on offer seemed a very good price

yup K1 is good, high surface area.
If you can get them at a good price, go for it.
