I am in the market for replacing a 240...the new tank I want to use canisters not a wetdry...had that on the 240...what it different. Think 3 fx5's is good enough for a 96x30x30 with sa/ca stock. I was looking at just slightly bigger 96x26.5x30tall and 2 fx5 and 2 Aquatop CF400 canisters but I might be able to squeeze out 30x30....so im thinking would I want another fx5. Or maybe I could do 2 aquatop cf500's in place of a fx5. I wouldnt mind the built in UV.

If money is not an issue I would not touch the FX5. I would get the Eheim 2262 1st choice or 2260 2nd choice. I have all 3 units and the Eheim is a far superior unit.

I have 2 already....money is a issue since I'm also getting the tank and lights too. That's why I went fx5. Now I'm just wondering a 3rd or two aquatops for about the same price.

I wonder if you're the biggest Eheim pimp.

I think he's just an eheim enthusiast, like myself and others. And we all know about your bad experience with your 2080... :)

OP, I've heard that fx5's are very powerful so thinking 3x would be enough, at least to start getting your new setup rolling. And you can always add more filtration later on if needed...

I just got a lot of things im trying to figure out...seeing if I can squeze out 30x30 and what kind of filters to use. I have 2 fx5's already. So maybe a 3rd...or two aquatop cf500's...or maybe ill spring for a 2262. I want to run a UV on the tank too. I already have a current gamma 25w with 1/2" and 3/4" fitting choices and a aquamedic 36w helix that has 3/4 1 and 1.5 options. The only inline heaters I have found are the hydor ones and the 300's have a 5/8" hose input nad out put. So just trying to see what will be best.

It's pimping when the OP ask about another filter and he comes and says you should get the Eheim instead. If it was one thread it would be different. He commented on my thread and suggested I installed it wrong, because he has never known Eheim to make a bad filter. I had already confirmed I thought that it was installed properly. It seems like if he spots a thread about an fx5 he has to come in and suggest a 2262 instead. I have an Eheim 2213 and it works great. I'm going to get an Eheim 2217 to replace a xp4 next month, because I like the 2213 so much. I also have an fx5 that works great. I've never had any issues with it. I would by another if the need arises. If the OP is open to a 2262 that might be the way to go. I saw a thread somewhere that showed the 2262 had a slower measured flow rate than the fx5. I'd suggest the 2262 for more emphasis on bio and the fx5 for mechanical. It depends on his stocking and which he's more worried about. As far as the 2080 goes Harley K is the biggest Eheim fan I know and even he has said the 2080 is a bad design.

It doesnt really matter to me about the eheim plug...I have looked at both and think the 2262 would have an edge in bio becasue of the size and the fx5 might flow more once all loaded up with media. Not sure but I know the fx5 is cheaper. I have 2 fx5s already and since im hoping to squeeze out a 8x30x30 im looking at a 3rd filter. I dont know if I have all 3 trays in 3 fx5's filled with bio if it will be enough...I think it will be but ill know after I set it up. If not I will just have to add something else. I can run my UV with my fx5 tho and probably still get good flow out of it and thats what I kinda need to in a big tank like that. I would like to not have to put powerheads in the tank.

The tank would be 96x30x30 but with 3/4" all around except the bottom being 1/2" its more like 94.5" x 28.75" x 28.50" of actual water (335.20g) and with 3 fx5's doing about 600 with media id be at 5.37 turnover...good for fresh.

I also like the idea of 3 of the same filter since I will end up having to have the intake pipe showing it will look better to me to have the same...and the fx5 intake isnt so bad to look at.

Well I guess I shouldn't have to worry about my tank staying clean then, because I just setup a 180 with an fx5 and a 40 gallon sump with a mag drive 18 return pump. I have two of the 1040 gph koralia pumps just incase.

If you were having to buy 3 fx5's then I'd say a sump(not wet/dry) would be the most cost effective way to go. I built mine for about 400 bucks, it outperforms 4 fx5's and is a breeze to maintain(socks)

But since you've already got 2, then it would make sense to add another. I like my Sunsun that I bought too though. Cheap and works well. I just hate cleaning it. Good bang for the buck though.
