3 inch alligator gar in 40gal tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
wait until he get around 8-9'' then move him to bigger tank, it is safer that way. but I think t is best to move him to a 20 gallon then move him to the 40 when he grow to 5-6'' then move hm to bigger tank when he is around 8-9'', it is to keep him from breaking his back due to too large of a tank when young.

How does a too large of a tank cause a broken back?

They can get scared and dart into the tank, it's happened to me once. Since the tank is so large, it gains enough velocity in order to break its back from hitting the tank so hard. Right Hung?

Alot of people build there own ponds, if you want inspiration just go to the pond subforum :D!
However i definetly couldnt see how a 3 - 4 foot fish, could live in a 6 x 6 foot pond, or tank. I'd definetly say that it would have to be something like 4 times the lenght, and 2 times the width of the fish.
Are you guys sure that the alligator gars, dont get bigger than 4, im could imagine they would atleast get so something that was near what they get to in the wild, like 6' or 5'.

Really to me, I could sit here at tell you dimensions all day and they'll always be vague. Yeah not that I look at how long six feet actually is you're right, twice as long as the fish is optimum but I think it would be OK, not great but just OK, it it is 1 and a half times the size of the fish.

Yeah and now that I look at the length of 6 feet again, an alligator could probably reach 5 or 6 foot in captivity if not larger. Lots of factors depending on food, water, etc.

Alligator usually won't grow past 3.5 feet in captivity, nonetheless a large tank is required. Don't expect a 9 foot monster, even with a big pond though, at least not for 20+ years.

The is acually a thread about someone keeping a cichlid (dont remember wich one) in the same size tank, as your suggesting compared to the fish.
It looks terrible. 2 times the width would be optimal, but id say an abselute minimum would be 1.5 the fishes width and 4 times its length.

Thank you guys for all the help, I definitely am going to try and upgrade when he reaches the 1ft mark. He seems happy in the 40gal for now, lately mostly at night it seems as if he keeps hes jaws open anyone know why heres a pic

I agreed with you the first time, and then you have repeated the same thing again for some reason attempting to justify the argument I already agreed with...

That is happening to my gar for some reason. I would give it a day or two, well that's what I'm doing. Then seek further assistance.
