I recently built a 300 gallon tank with an overflow filter system underneath the main tank. Looks great, and have given a lot of badly needed space for my 3 leos. Problem is, the water is cloudy as heck. May be the sand I put in a month ago, but I've siphoned it once a week to no avail. In fact, I think it's getting worse.

Anyone else have this problem? How did you solve? Or are stingray owners with sand doomed to this fate since these suckers are always blowing in the sand?

Thanks all.

what kind of cloudy... by now it should not be the sand anymore...

maybe ur flow rate of filters are alittle under ... for efficient filteration & clear water, u'll need at least 4.5 time turn over per hr ... i'm using 6 time turn over per hr for my tank ....

i had this problem once, it was caused by a strenthener tab at the top of my wier stopping the surface of the water going down the over flows, try breaking the surface of the water thas what worked for me.

what do u mean by "strenthener tab"?

i get cloudy water every now and then from unknown causes also....

i wonder if its my bio balls getting too crudded up...

I'll take a pic this weekend and see what you guys think. It's really frustrating...

The total cubic volume of the tank + filter is 1500 liters (~400 gallons), and the power head supposedly does 5000 liters per hour, so that's just about 3.5 times per hour. Perhaps a bit weak.... ugh...

Remember to account for head pressure on that pump. It could be even less. And your flow will be hampered by lots of elbows in your plumbing. Hope that helps.

Bacterial Bloom

Not enough Biomedia or Not established enough Biomedia...

Add more GPH and more Biomedia, and it should go away shortly..

Fine grain gravel/sand and driftwood also adds surface area for good bacteria..
