if it's bacterial bloom, cut out feeding for a few days and it'll clear it up. Try that first :)

Thanks all. I tried a couple of things: 1) fed only once a day for about a week and 2) added a wave maker inside the tank. It appears for be working, and the water is clearer. I'm also going to clean the filter tank this weekend, just to make sure.

I guess the lesson learned is that increasing flow inside the tank itself (with a wave maker) does help quite a bit. Naively I thought that if the small particles (whether bacterial bloom or just dirt) was floating around, it must be making its way into the filter. Not true. They were indeed just floating around, most don't make their way into the overflow. Good current inside the tank is a must, IMO.

I do think I need to increase the filtration flow too by adding another powerhead... that will be a weekend project.

Bacterial Bloom

Not enough Biomedia or Not established enough Biomedia...

Add more GPH and more Biomedia, and it should go away shortly..

Fine grain gravel/sand and driftwood also adds surface area for good bacteria..

x2 ...I'd still like to see some pictures to see what you're talking about.
