3 month old motoro just purchased. Will not eat.

you quite possibly killed the ray bud. I suggest IF the ray dies, do NOT get another one until you research on their care... and that tank is WAY WAY WAY to small for the ray. your ammonia and nitrites are DEF not at zero if everything is new.... don't go buy something just bc it looks cool, and you dont know how to care for it man. cmon, think of how the ray is feeling right now!

yup sounds like u need to do some studying on the nitrogen cycle and somehow get some seasoned filters on that tank

Seasoned filters? Please explain....my last ray lasted over 6 months and grew and ate a bunch, very healthy thick ray...as far as killing it, obviously not purposly, and I didn't go buy a fish because it looks cool, so don't go running your mouth until you know me. Im an animal lover and if you read my post the tank is temporary until I find the 180gal for a decent price, not $1,000. Now let's figure out the task at hand and not point fingers to make yourself look intelligent because maybe you do have more experience with rays, but that's where help comes in, not finger pointing.

Have you read the sticky's first off about rays? That will get you further along in ray knowledge real quick because it sounds like you need to learn a bit more about the whole aquarium hobby. I know it is hard to hear the criticism comming from these guys, but they really know what they are talking about and honestly it is really hard to see people come onto this forum everyday that are essentially killing their fish just from lack of knowing any better. Rays really arn't that hard to take care of but there are a few things that you MUST do to take care of these animals properly. First they need alot of water volume as they produce a ton of waste and it is hard to keep up on good water quality in a small tank. Second you can never put any fish especially a ray into a new tank, the person that sold you that ray should be ashamed of them selves they sent that ray home with you probably knowing full well it would die. Try and find somebody that has a well established tank and filters and get the really nasty stuff out of the filter and put it into your tank, sounds gross but you have got to get BB in your tank ASAP. Do water changes everyday of about 25% with water that has had Prime or something added to dechlor the water. Get that ray some black worms, turn the lights off, and pray to whatever god you believe in. Because to tell you the truth I will be surprised if your ray makes it. But I guess lesson learned hopefully since this is your second ray you are trying to kill maybe you will get it this time. Good luck and I hope I haven't been too hard on you. But really you need these people to be straight up with you, we don't sugar coat things on this forum especially in the ray second. We are fanatical about our rays. So welcome to the forum :)

heres a pretty straight to the point read on the nitrogen cycle http://www.fishlore.com/NitrogenCycle.htm

wht i meant by seasoned filters was filters that have been on an existing tank for a long period of time. in order for your tank to run properly, u need to have filters with beneficial bacteria growing in them to break down the fishes waste

I happened to notice that not only do you have that ray in a small tank he is in one of those coffetable tanks which have the worst filtration of anytank I have ever seen. But thats just my .02. Would the LFS that sold him to you possibly take him back until you get suitable houseing for him?

Ok, so from the top.

Ray is gone, sad day. Lesson learned the hard way I guess, and here goes to feeling horrible for the next couple of days.

Secondly, I called the owner of the store, spoke with him. I'm almost sure my tank wasn't properly cycled. So, he offered to give me 10 gallons of his water from his tank to get my tank cycling, and get it ready hopfully in the next few weeks for a ray he sound like hes going to give me much cheaper deal on another ray.

Is this a good method to getting bacteria to my new filters in the tank?
I want this done right, and that way as soon as I find my 6X2X2 tank I can get it cycling at the same time.

I'm a lover for stingrays, aquatic life, and things underwater, I'm actaully looking to get certified to dive, as I didn't become the marine biologist like I wanted to, haha.

All seriousness, would 10 gallons help seed the tank and get it going better than going and buying 2-3 fish? or adding ammonia to the tank?

Edit for reply: for the filtration they had a tom dive clean 85II which was not nearly enough for a ray or the amount of water, however I ordered TWO tom dive clean 125 (larger, and took out the single 85II) I thought this was a decent method, carbon on bottom and filter on top, times two. Is there a better method or filter I can do/buy to make it better? I'm not looking to spend a fortune as I'm really trying to find a 180, and set a 180 up.

I open ears to everyone with positive criticism.

the water probably won't do much. you need actual bacteria, so filter media, sponges, etc where they live.

before you get another ray, i would suggest finding that 180g you're looking for, and getting proper filtration for it. canister filters, a sump.

your current setup with the 2 tom dive filters isn't enough. they are rated each for 29-40g of filtration. not nearly good enough. don't mess around with filtration when it comes to rays. being cheap about it will ensure future buys die as well.

if you get another motoro, you'll have to upgrade the 6x2x2 tank anyways, alot of motoros reach 20 inches in disc, if not larger. would you be comfortable in a room that is slightly wider than your shoulders?

hold off on buying the next ray until you've figured out these other problems first.

With the two filters rated double the tank capacity, wouldn't it be plenty for filtration? That was my theory and why I purchased a second one.

Does anyone have any other ideas where to buy the 180 gallon? I have the funds, its just finding the right deal, I know I can find one for less that $900. that seems a little much for a used tank...

so, you're saying your tank is only a 40g tank? confused, as the filters are rated 58-80g together and half of that is 40g. if so, no ray should be in a tank that size, ever.

why don't you go look into an actual aquarium store? i see tanks all the time, 180g+ for 400$ give or take.

rays put out a huge bioload. you need a huge water column to dilute it, or massive filtration to get that bioload out of the water. double the capacity is nothing. a lot of people on here have 5-10 times the turnover rate on their tanks to filter out the waste.

with your small tank and small filtration, it's no wonder the rays went belly up. blunt but honest. they literally died in their own filth.

i started out with a 90g tank, a fluval 405 canister, and 2 small 3" retics. even then i felt that the filtration wasn't quite enough. now i run a huge biotower sump on a 300g self built tank, with 4 drawers of filtration, with the fluval 405 piggybacked on the tank to keep the bacteria alive while i re-setup my other tanks.

if you do get a 180g tank, look for a filter that will do at least 600gph (fx5 canister or an eheim), if not more. then maybe think about getting a ray for it.
