Thanks everyone! David....Thank you for taking the time to write out your in depth explanation and thoughts. My tank trim is actually normal but I modified the stand it will be sitting on with a 3" decorative trim face to cover up the contrasting stand to aquarium trim color. Suppose I could have gone with something smaller but liked the look.
Looks like at this point I will probably just stick with the 1" or at absolutely most 2". I didn't realize the 1lb per gallon only ended up at an 1" of sand. I have no interest in putting over 300# of sand in this thing to get it to the trim level. I'm sure it will look fine as is. It's not going to be a live planted tank but I will have a few artificial in it.
Has anyone ever used aquarium silicone to attach a few plastic plants directly to the eggcrate? If I do this I could easily get away with the 1" without them being rooted constantly. Otherwise I could strategically place a few rocks with the plants attached but I would like to have at least a few plants popping up here and there without a rock for support. If possible...
Oh BTW....I picked up 150lbs of pool sand at Leslie's pool supply. Has a nice darker tan with black speckled look to it for a little under $30. Took a little bit of cleaning to get it running clear but think it will look nice once in the tank.
