30" Black Arowana Aggressiveness!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Pics coming soon the guy has not sent me a pic its a friend of a friend.
With everybody giving there thumbs up I am thinking of getting this Arowana.
I do want to introduce them at the same time to my 720.
He actually wants 400 dollars for the Arowana. I want to talk him down a few bucks. What do these huge Black Arowanas go for anyway?

Not sure? Mine was $150 I think at 8". The trick is catching it without a panic run into the side of the tank. I figure you have one chance to catch that fish or you’re going to kill it.

Aros tend to panic easy but Blacks are the most calm. I do not mess around inside my tank. I don't move anything around and I never stick my hand it the tank. I'm very careful cleaning the acrylic of the tank with one of those magnet cleaners. If the Aro starts to look jumpy I just walk away for 30 minutes.

I have a trickle system so I don’t even do water changes anymore. Even water changes use to freak out my Black. So that’s something to think about if you get that Aro.

Thanks so much for this insight. I own an Armatus and I do the same things you talk about. I will never take it for granted how bold mine is. I seen him one time do a death run and he survived and I know it can happen anytime again. I will consider this about the Aro. I dont think I want anymore fish that can spook easy.

I just made a post in the Armatus section.

I really can use the help of the Black Arowana guys since I feel both fish are capable of death runs and jumps!

"I have an extremely bold fish that circles when I come near the tank. I dont want to ever take that for granted since I know it only takes one spook.

I was thinking to take all the tops off and when he circles make a big move on him.

I was wondering what peoples thoughts are at this time.

Should I put him in a fish bag for an hour and float him in his new tank or just transfer fast as possible?

I don't want him to do a run in the 720 since I am thinking he can get some crazy speed going."

My blacks are very non agressive towards the other tank mates, they do nip at each each other though. And I have to keep an eye on the bigger aro, lately lately has been looking at my fingers at feeding time.

My Black Aro is only 28"-29" but it's not shy. I stick my hand in the tank and wipe the acrylic during waterchanges. Sometimes I handfeed the Aro. Very calm fish. It just takes time for the Aro to get used to you.
