a 30 gallon would be great for a fuzzy dwarf or a fu manchu lion-fish. My recommendation's would be set it up like a FOWLR tank and you'll be good. If your not sure what a FOWLR is let me know and I'll break down the components like a heater a protein skimmer, 2-3 pumps for some flow. some sort of filter so you can add some carbon and some more flow. a good source of water preferably RO/DI water, a good refractometer.

ok can you break it down for me cuz right now this would be my only saltwater i hav a 200 gal oceanic freshwater but thats it the tank came with the hot magnum filter for a 55gal which is an ok filter...it has a bunch of other stuff i havnt really looked at yet and i know the basics but i was wondering what for the substrates rock the fish i dont really want a fuzzy dwarf cuz they are very inactive i really like the radiata but i cant find one anywere i was also wondering how long i could keep a volitan in there

volitan would able to be there for maybe a few month's depending on size but most likely will outgrow it quick depending on it's feeding behavior and diet. I think some good live rock would be perfect for your lionfish so it can rest and hide when it want's some time alone the lion-fish we have love's cave's. radiata are tricky to find have you ever considered the fu manchu lionfish a bit more beautiful and you could keep with no problem in a 55 gallon personally it is my favorite lion-fish better color pattern's more attractive and have a great personality toward's the hand that feed's.

I'd be leery on any lionfish in that bad boy. Keep in mind while they do tend to be more sedentary than their larger cousins, they commonly break 6 inches. With the amount of rock and sand for good filtration that could be awfully cramped. Fu manchu's are also a great small lionfish but the attrition rate is huge. 1 out of 10 make it past shipping, acclimating and into eating for us. Good luck!

very true however if you go through a reliable shipping source like liveaquaria.com or bluezooaquatics.com you can have a much greater chance like 8 out of 10 I have had several fu manchu over many year's and just took the time to question the company ordering from and go from there but it pay's to be consiencese about your decision's in the long run. you could also try a zebra lion-fish http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=15+36+230&pcatid=230 .
