I want to redo my 30 gallon and want to keep one cichlid in it if possible.

I've heard people here say 30's ok for a convict but I'd like to find something else...less common maybe but colorful. Female Salvini is my first chioce, but I think 30 might be too small.

I have been advised against a single Discus too. Not sure if there is another type of SA/CA i can keep alone in this tank, but I have looked at copora nicaraguense as a possibility...still learning about them though so not sure

Ideas???

If not I could try an African pair I guess, but it would be my first try with them. Would need to read and get more info on them first for certain

30Gallon can house a pair of Firemouth/Convicts/Blue Acara but that's the absolute bare minimum and I wouldn't do it. Salvini's get a bit big for 30Gal.

Perhaps take a look at some of the Ram Cichlids, only grow to 3" or so, so you could get a couple of them and house them with Tetra and the like. Would be a reasonable tank.

a female sal would be fine for a 30 gallon, IMO you could have a pair. you could try a pair of sajicas or rarer thorichthys sp.?

I have already donr GBR's and they were ok but I want something bigger. No way I'm trying a pair of SA/CA's or anything other than dwarf cichlids in a a 30 either. just don't feel right about it

My gut says the female Sal is gona be too cramped....But I know others have kept single male FM's in 30 gallon tanks and a female Sal is around the same size.....

What about HRP's Honduran Red Points??

Anyone tried them in a "Small" tank?

This thread is really making me want to start back up my 29gallon tank...I liked the double firemouth idea...

I really think a 30 gallon would be fine for a female sal with no problems. Hell my 40 gallon is overstocked as hell and the tank is superb with my 7" Diadema 6" Male salvini and my 4" con with my two little brochis cats. it all depends on footprint. If it is a 30 long then your good but if it's any less short in length or width I would advise against it. Maybe you want to go into some rare Acaras. Many people don't get into Aequidens Acaras and they are Excellent fish to have. Like my Diadema I am sooo happy that SMS let me have his A.Diadema because it made me get into the Acara theme. Get into smaller Acaras or you might want to even go with Microgeophagus.

Nanoluteus, sajica, septemfasciatis, hrp's, or just a single species growout. Get a little RD or something and start him in there for a while? OR if exos are available to you a group of ten in a planted would look nice as well. Lots of potential for your tank...

A pair of red Jewels...or Rams would be my choice.

I'd personally go with A. panamensis. Beautiful little (5") CA cichlid, pretty uncommon, easily bred.

No one likes to think outside the box. :(

I think firemouths would look awesome in that tank
