A magnum 350 would suit you well, with capacity to spare.
Maybe a pro edition. He needs some bio

The 350 is better left to secondary and water polishing.

EHEIM canisters are second to none in reliability. I have one on my 29 gal. community tank and it is silent, I can hear the Whisper i10-30 internal power filter on my 10 much better than I can the EHEIM on my 29. I have actually had to stick my hand on it or feel of the output to make sure it was plugged in after cleaning.

Fluvals are also good as well as a few other brands. But you can't go wrong with an EHEIM.

Talk about quiet- my quietest air pump is louder than my 2217.

I said I have the 2217 and I love it, but I think any Eheim would be good. The 2217 is overkill for your tank, but the 2213 might be pushing it on the small side. Personally, I'd go with the 2215 were I you (I think $105 at Drs Foster & Smith?), but a $69 2213 at PetSmart is hard to pass up. Though, in a 55 gallon, I think if I had the 2213 I'd end up putting a powerhead in the tank as well. Add the cost of a powerhead to the $69 for the 2213, and you're better off just buying the 2215 and skipping the powerhead.

And avoid the Magnum 350. I clean a 55 gallon cichlid tank with 8 mbunas in it filtered by a 350 and it's awful. Water parameters are always crappy, tank is always filthy, and the owner can't keep fish alive. Plus, the 350 is only a few bucks cheaper than a 2215, and definitely worth the $5-10 more.

I have a 2217 on my sons 30 long tank, with a sponge prefilter.Other than washing out the prefilter 2x a week I do no maintenance on the filter.Ive had a few canister filters and this is the first one I have owned that I havent grown to hate. Its a great filter and keeps the tank really nice and clean.
