Hey guys! My 30 gallon is coming along quite well. Got some driftwood soaking outside, got a Penguin 350 rated for a 75 gallon aquarium running, just waiting for it to cycle while getting a few more odds and ends, such as the lights and heater. I've decided that I do indeed want to make it a low tech planted tank. After getting some more ideas from the planted section, it seems pretty doable. My question is, what I want to put in it? After some years without having a tank, there are hundreds of ideas trolling through my head. :p
I would like it to be a community tank. I don't want to be limited to one fish or even one specific type of fish. I had a few ideas, though it is impossible to run through them all. I am not really interested in the idea of mollies, platys, guppys, etc. Some tetras, though not all. The main fish I would like to include would be either some corys or loaches, along with either some sort of gourami (perhaps pearls?), some sort of rainbowfish (boesemani?), or some blue rams. Perhaps a combination of 5 panda corys, 5 black skirt tetras (or another tetra), and 2 of the aforementioned larger fish?

P.S. Sorry for the utter generality of this post. I understand that there are many other topics related to the stocking of 30 gallon planted tanks. I have browsed through too many to count in recent days. The problem lies in the constant inclusion of mollies, platys, and guppies.

^ maybe replace small pleco with Ottos and possibly silver flying fox might be better?

Well, other than the size, i was just also thinking they poop a lot less than plecos too... Since plecos seem to forever have poop coming out their rear end...

I thought about the possibility of including some shrimp when I finish stocking. Would the hang on back not suck them all up? Flow rate is pretty high.. water turnover is a bit under 12 times an hour. Also, I was worried that the inclusion of rams or whatever larger centerpiece fish I opted to go for would also end up eating them, or at least the fry that would further the shrimp population.

The only time they get sucked up is when they die.
