I am interested in keeping my first puffer. I have a 30 gallon tank that I am going to start setting up. Any suggestions on what kind of puffer and what kind of set up for the tank?

If you are fine with keeping a single specimen Tetraodon miurus or suvattii are your choice. You could also take some of the other smaller piscivore puffers.

Both are more lurker species of puffers, although my Congo, (T.Miurus) tends to be quite active and very rarely buries himself unless the lights go off or he's attempting to hunt...

As for the Suvatti, same thing, they are known to bury themselves, although each puffer has its own personality and may or may not bury themselves...

But with that being said, the do prefer a substrate bottom (with no sharp edges) so that if they decide to do so they can bury themselves without getting hurt...

Any way for pictures and more info check out these two links:

Suvatti: PICS

T.Miurus: PICS

Hey sstromerson, I see I got you thinkin of a puff!
My vote still goes for Congo!

Good set-up would definintely require sandy substrate for the congo to burry itself if it wants, a cave or two, maybe a piece of drift wood and some plants should do the trick!

Whether you get a congo on not, good luck :)

i vote congo as well. i cant wait to get one again, seeing it bury itself is amazing to watch. plus their "hunting skills"

Good luck finding one--they seem to be difficult to come by lately.

That's strange. they were or even are readily available here in Europe the last couple of months.

sorry for off-topic...

never really noticed if they havent been as available. the only somewhat local place that i have seen one was that fish place and that was about a year ago, they had 3 of them
