Just wondering if this is possible, and if so how you would go about making a shelf strong enough to support a tank this size.

Its 4 feet long, 1 foot wide, 1 foot high.

I believe this would weight around 240 pounds just in water, then need to consider rocks/gravel/filters/hood/lights etc.

So it would have to be pretty strong and stable.

Thanks in advance.

well it would be vary hard to do this becuase even with braces you would push them threw the wall with all the wait. if you had supports straight to the ground that would be best or if you reinforce inside the wall with 2x4's and use extremely heavy duty brackets with big screws to hold it in place or you could build some sort of brace from the ceiling down,

I had mine on an old Dresser someone gave me. it only had 2 reinforcements in the middle of the length, which was really just where the drawers were. I unscrewed the legs so it would sit flat on the floor. It worked great.

Bracing the bottom is the only way I see going about this. If we had a few pictures of the shelf you were planning on setting the tank on we could be more help.

I love those tanks, the size is perfect for a small community or planted tank because it is long, but not too tall.

Dont have a shelf to take a picture of, I was going to buy wood etc and make one, thats why I am here :)

By the replys I am guessing its not a viable thing to try.

Are you talking about a floating shelf... If so you could probably go directly to the studwork of the wall with some brackets couldn't you. If you centered it along the studs that's roughly 100lbs on each. It seems like it would be possible but might might be bulky.

I'm in the UK, our walls are solid brickwork, its not a studded wall its a wall on the side of the house which would be a brick wall, gap for insulation then another brick wall on the outside.

Oops. Just assumed. I'm still not convinced it can't be done but there would still need to be some kickers coming down at a 45 and some pretty hefty block anchors. (1 every 12" would divide the weight up but may look goofy) This is one of those if there's a will type jobs, but I don't know if it would be worth the effort.

Yeah after some research I am coming to the same conclusion, never mind, normal stand it is :P

Personally I think its do-able, how many upper kitchen cabinets do you have that are full of canned goods, think you might be supprised by how little actually hold them to the wall.
