It can be done.... I used to be a carpenter and it IS possible. Just not really worth all the aggravation to do it. To reinforce the shelf, you would basically build a knee wall with joists going across. Its like building a mini deck. But really its not worth it unless you were going to build it into wall flush. You could however build a really nice custom stand with pine and then sheath it with some nice wood. Saves a bit of money
i know your probably already planning the normal stand, but i was wondering is this an owned house? if so i was thinking with a some triangle brackets underneath and then running some wire or chains into the ceiling supports.
i think it would look pretty unique and should be able to hold with both
