JD's are gorgeous fish and cons have great personality. I don't currently keep either but I've kept both in the past and both are great fish. if they've lost any popularity it's only because they're so commonly available and so many more species are available now adays. heck just in the past couple of years the number of species commonly available has grown a lot. a few years ago I'd have never imagined being able to go into an lfs and buy V. argentea, N. haitiensis or N. grammodes. within the last year I have seen all 3 of these in shops in the Indy area.

:)

my male was about 4-3/4", at least 6" with the tail finnage.

plenty of filtration, plenty of wc in place of carbon. more mech/bio used. no prob

I've had some monster Dempseys and some pretty impressive cons over the years. My favorite male con was one of many casualties caused by a faulty heater (what salty veteran can say they haven't had one of those tragedies). He had a huge nuchal hump and was just an awesome fish. I've bred Dempseys many many many times.

It's just a simple matter of supply and demand dude... You can't ask a big price for a fish that is so common because it's easy to breed, domesticated, and bullet proof. The customer will just go down the street to the next shop with a whole tank full of fish. Now, that being said, take a fish that's more difficult to keep, raise, and breed like dovii, festae, or trimac. If' you've got a tank full of these, the shop down the street probably does not. You can ask a bit more for them and people will pay it. You can even list them online and people will pay shipping to get good quality fish. I know I do...

Here is a (poor quality) pic of a pair of Dempseys I had a few years back.

I think you are mistaken:) I believe both are more popular than ever have been !! :D Just because the price is lower and they are not everywhere in 10 tanks at the lfs means absolutely nothing :) As shown in this thread.. SO you are in for some luck in your pic request .. :D

Infact I believe that there is more in private ownership and sales of these sp. than lfs..

But any way here are my Jacks :) and I'll get a pic of my Cons.. I haven't had an Old male for about 3 years ..I moved allot .. Though now i am more suited to keeping some of the oldy but goodies :)

I love the JD, EBJD and THe CONvict Cichlids... I have them all, and am trying to breed them all. i have bred the convicts with ease, and have some pinks breeding with blacks right now. But far as the JD's go, i have a nice male EBJD and i was trying to breed him with a female JD. about a week or so ago i added 2 JD's to my tank(females i hope) and now i noticed my EBJD is not eating as much and his jaw looks crooked... Only one side of his gills are flapping when he is breathing... I dont know what is wrong, but i couldnt imagine my Little 2.5" JD's hurting my 5" EBJD... anyone ever see this behavior in a EBJD or a JD?? He is not swimming as much anymore, now he just chills on the substrate, i got him to eat some bloodworms this weekend but i couldnt get him to eat a worm.. (his normal DELICACY!) Any advice on what to do? all the other fish in the tank are fine...

here are some of the cichlid pics!
