Sounds like a pretty good setup.

You should probably do less sand. Sand should cover at a depth of less than 1 inch, any deeper than that is detrimental. It will just collect wastes at deeper depths, compromising water quality.

You could take the bioballs out of the wet/dry and put in a Deep Sand Bed(at least 3 inches) to help with nitrates.

Flow wise it sounds good. You should be just fine with that setup. A couple powerheads could help to improve random turbulence.

Keep us updated on your progress in converting the setup.

The DSB might be a dice roll.

Ill tell you this much. If I was ever going to do a DSB, I would make sure that absolutely NOTHING could get into that sand.

We are talking filter socks, or something along those lines.

I guess the question really isnt so much of whether or not you are going to be a nitrate farmer, so much as, where are you going to keep those nitreates?

You might want to think of adding a bit more live rock. 75lbs for a 300 gallon tank won't be that much

+1 for bumping up the live rock and using less sand.

We currently use the FX5 for our 75 gallon tank and it does well - not sure how it will do for 300. I've heard that groupers are pretty messy (although my mom disagrees).

I've also heard people recommend that you use a skimmer rated 3x's the volume of your tank.. As I don't have a 300 gallon, I'm not sure what's out there.

And yes - I'd add a heater (or back up).

Keep us updated on your progress. We have a reef tank but I'm wanting a much LARGER FOWLR for some BIG pretty fishies!

The heater seems very small, since a 300 watt heater is usually rated for a 75-100 gallong tank.

While you can use cannisters on saltwater, I dont like them. Most people fail to keep up with the demanding maintenance required when using one. I would ditch it and put that money towards the skimmer... unless you already have it, then I would just put it in storage.

hey hearth thanks for the info on the canister, ill probley sell it.. the heater is fine for a 300 it keeps the tank 8 to 10 degrees above room temp. tank and sump equal about 315-320g.
