300 GAL GLASS DIY NYC BABY !!! =]

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
sorry for late reply folks ! Been busy at work, lots of changes in life blah blah ;)

Here it is, first of all, the L shaped brackets that I was talking about are nothing else than a 4x4 wood screwed perpendicularly to a 2x4 all so that I can know whether the base and the sides of the aquarium are squared ... you'll see on the picture

So now I have a real headache ... because I'm not sure if I can get away without wed dry filter. Let me tell you what I know for sure what I want and if you could advice me on the rest that would be awesome.

So the tank is just a little shy of being a 300gal, I plan on making it look like a "riparium" - it will be filled with approx 150gal of water, the rest will be for the terrestrial, marsh, bog and emersed aquatic plants that will grow attached to the rear wall of the tank right at the surface of water.

Most of the tank will be covered so that I can keep it very humid inside for the emersed plants.

Now, originally I was thinking about keeping stingrays, but then I realized I really want it to be a planted tank. I've always wanted to try discus ( again ) because last time I owned them I knew very little about this hobby ( not that now I'm a pro lol ). That said this will be a planted, riparium style, discus tank.

I really would like to skip wet dry filtration, I had accidents with overflows, sumps in the past so this is what I'm thinking.

150gal of water, planted all on the tank's floor and at the surface + automated water changes ( that can be adjusted, I'm thinking 20 / 30 gals per 2,3 days ) and for filtration I have an FX5 and I have a DE pool filter. Perfectly I wold like to get two old school eheims, connect them together, run them on one pump and other set of filtration, I was thinking hooking up a sand filter + DE filter.

I plan on drilling the tank so that there is no ugly hoses going over the top of the tank. Inlets to the filters will be on the opposite sides of the tank's length, by the rear wall. Outlets also on the opposite sides, one closer to the front wall one by the rear ( so that they circulate the water well )

Didn't decide on the lights yet ( I have 2 x 150 metal halides by coralife, I love the way they look but IDK if they will provide enough, equally spread light ... that's the least of the concern right now.

Substrate will be 100% eco complete ( min 10 bags ... who knows maybe as many as 15 baggies ... )

I really like the 3d backgrounds but I'm worried about something leaking into the water and killing the fragile discus ... I may as well just get some long black planter from my hydroponic store and silicone it to the rear wall for the riparium plants ... idk yet

any thoughts, ideas, advises are more than welcomed !

that tank is going to be awesome if you get discus, i have kept domestics for the past year and a half. mine are all red turquoise, im a fan of all the same strain. im sure youve done your research, but i read up for a year before getting discus. Simplydiscus is the best forum for anything discus.

Looks like you're off to a very good start, can't wait to see the finished set-up.

Looks great. The seams came out really clean. Might have to give you call when I finally get around to assembling my tank (still working on the stand for now).

Sorry to hear that you're ditching the ray idea (footprint would have been great for them) but your previous planted tanks were awesome so I'm sure this one will turn out really nice as well. Are you sure about discus though? It seems to me like they look best in tall tanks and you're only going to have 12" of water in this setup.

yes sir, I did my research on top of years of failures in keeping them lol ;) I've been on simply since 2006 or so, it's a great forum.

I'm very torn as of the strain of discus I want or even ... may change my mind in the fauna in general ... time will show - If I get discus I always loved solid red strains, Red Cover, San Merah is super nice too. I always wanted to have penang eruptions as well ! I've kept Blue Diamons and loved them as well ... on top of all I always liked how wild strains look so it will be veeeeerrrrry difficult to decide ... :/

Hello the_deeb ! I was hoping you'll chip in =]

I'll be more than happy to help you out with the tank, so let me know whenever you gonna need help. I myself am working on the stand too, can't really decide how I want it to look finished, most likely will go with some 1/2 finish plywood all around that will be painted matte, not sure what color yet.

To be honest I'm not 110% sure I will get discus, but I would love to get them and see how they would look in a riparium. I'm not ready for rays - I can't fill the tank all the way cuz of my floor's dead load restriction :/ and I would not want to keep rays in something that's just 150 gallons. Some day I will have them, some day ;)

Thanks for the compliment on the old tank, yeah I liked how it came out too, and I hope this one will be successful despite my recent fails ( I rushed every time, set up small tanks, shoved plants in and expected they will grow ... ) So yeah, fingers crossed !!!

Looks great, I have been researching into building a glass tank but cant seem to find anything on what to use as trim to help keep it all together? What did you use?
