Well after reading what carpboyjoe had to say about how he hates how bulky and overbuilt our North American stands tend to be, I feel kind of leery or sheepish if you will posting about my project. I have gained a lot of ideas from this forum and other sites and I feel like I should share with you guys anyway even if he will probably hate it and maybe flame on me. So here goes from start to finish I hope most of you don't think it's poo.:)

Stage 1.

As you can see, it's way overbuilt because I have a wife that really understands "overkill". I doubled up 2'' x 4'' 's and used framing brackets from the Home Depot with 2 1/2'' wood screws. Next to the frame stand you can see the fish tank set up in my garage on the old stand that did not pass with the wife's aesthetic approval.

Stage 2.

This involved the framing and fitting of all the hardware as well as checking for fit on the canopy. In the pictures you can see that I had a moisture problem from not having the water covered with glass to prevent that. It has since been rectified. All the framing and finishing was done in Maple with 1 1/4'' finishing nails.

looks awesome! but i think overbuilt is an understatement!

Stage 3.

Final and most time consuming stage. A lot of prep, sanding, staining, more staining, more sanding and then varnishing. This stage took me about 2 weeks of working everyday after work. My wife wanted as dark a stain as possible without it being redish or black looking. I think it worked out pretty good. It sure looks amazing in my living room. And for those who might be curious, I put up 2 pony walls that go straight to concrete to make sure that my floor would be fine. Again, a placating the wife step.

Oh, and a shot of my Tig. He looks pretty happy doesn't he?:)
