I have a 300 gallon tank with many fish in it. I keep testing my water alot. My ammonia (NH3/NH4) and NO3 seem a little off. My NO3 is right at 40ppm. i Know that fine but my NH3/NH4 is at .50ppm and has been that way for weeks. I only feed 3 times a week as well and just enough. I did get ick about 3 weeks ago and treated. Im just worried because i have some fish that are worth alot of money. They seem to be doing good and there all eating. I have like 3 fish that have one eye thats a little cloudy but not to bad. I did do some water changes like normal and i use aquarium salt. I have a fluval fx5 and wet dry setup. Anyones help will be good. Thanks

Sounds like a water change is in order. Does your water have ammonia in it to start with? With an established bacterial colony (cycled tank), you should never really have ammonia readings.

well i have had a amonia reading for about 2 weeks now. i have never had a problem before and i only feed on mon, wed and fri. so i know its not waste thats causeing it. i did a water change last week as well. This tank is got me by the balls big time. my 180 was always easy and this one is killing me.

Your clue was great and thanks for detailing everything that was out of the oridinary. You biological bacteria has been damaged by your ick treatment. I have lost an entire tank because of this. Ammonia is present now only because your bacteria colony has died off a little bit and will need time and water changes to recover. Ammonia terrifies me so I would probably do as much water changes daily as needed to get the ammonia down to about .10ppm (leaving some ammonia in the water to help re-establish your bio-colony while lessening the strain on your fish).

My friend used something like that once for his salt tank and it established a colony in a matter of hours, and we never saw any spikes in ammonia or nitrite. But his came in a bag that needed to be refrigerated. I believe this stuff will be worth the investment. $9.99 is a fraction of the value of your fish. Plus you can post if it works and maybe help other MFK'ers who do the same thing.

I wish they had that stuff when I treated for ick and the ammonia spike killed about $60 in fish.

thanks for the help. im gonna pick up two bottles of it today and treat for 300 gallons. it shouldnt hurt my tank since it good for it anyways. i have used it before with my 29 gallon bio cube and everything went good. just wanted to ask and make sure. its deff worth the $9.99 a bottle.

Nice tank in your avatar, by the way.

They should put warnings on ick treatment "May devestate you bio filter and lead to mass death of all living things in your tank if not caught in time", but that would probably not be good for sales :)
