Awesome tank man! Festae is a future stunner for sure, and it's nice to hear the Con has bounced back as well. Nice job![]()
awesome tank and fish. that jd looks like he has some stories to tell![]()
you have no idea.....
He was one of our first cichlids and originally lived in a 90 with a fire mouth and a jewel. I went on a business trip for a week or so and during the trip my wife calls me frantically telling me the jewel was tearing the jd to shreds. Just out of the blue. No rhyme or reason. She netted him out and put him in a 20 gallon hospital tank till i got home. When i returned, i found that most of his dorsal was ripped up and several pieces were gone (including the one still missing). I kept him in the 20 for about a month keeping the water changed every other day and feeding him lots of good food.
I reintroduced him to the 90 once he had healed and immediately the jewel went right after him. Problem was, he had put on a good bit of size in isolation so the fight was much more in his favor. Jewel attacked and before i could get the net out of the stand, "Buford" the JD, gutted the jewel completely. I've never seen a fish kill another fish so quickly, especially since he was on the defensive. So , immediately he took charge of the tank again, but he started bullying all the other tank mates. Since I knew the 300 would be in the house soon, I picked up the Midas to chill things out and it did for awhile. The Midas was a bit bigger(and still is) so he basically ran the show with the JD constantly giving the Midas a wide birth and staying out of the way.
Then the 300 arrived and so did 'Mo" our freddy. All the fish went in and both the JD and MIdas took a liking to "Mo", but she chose the JD. The Midas still ran the tank, but now that the JD had a girl to impress, things got weird for awhile. The Midas would go into fits of rage over "Mo's" constant rejections, and then one day, he didn't come out to eat. Few days went by and he still wasnt eating and we noticed he whole head was torn up and lips were swollen, but no other fish in the tank showed andy signs of a fight. After a few more days, he came around and started eating again, but that's when it had became obvious what had happened. The JD shot across the tank lip locked the Midas with almost no warning and beat him back into his corner. After a day or so, the Midas went into full submissive mode and everything has been back to normal, except now "Buford" once again rules the tank.
extremely personable fish too. One of our favorite wet-pets
