Okay, I am seeking some advice. After building my 180 gallon tank last year i have found that it is somehow too small now. So I am looking to build bigger and would like input form you guys. My choices are as follows

96L*30W*24H using 10mm glass

or

120L*30W*24H using 10mm glass

My present stand design has my 180g (72L*25W*24H) on top with a (48L*24W*16H) breeding tank at the bottom.

which ever set up I use I would like for the 180g to now go on the bottom with the other tank on the top.

My questions are:-

1) can I use 10mm glass on the tanks I want to build, given everything I have read the height is the important factor and this "should work".

2) Has anyone set up a duel tank stand with tanks this large before?

I would go with 12mm glass minimum simply for the safety factor. I've seen a few people setup dual tank stands for tanks this big, the trouble isn't sturdiness or safety as you'd expect. The trouble is tank maintenance. With those big of tanks it becomes very hard to deal with anything that needs to be done on the bottom tank. So you'll need to think about that along with safety/durability and piping when doing the stand.

I would agree with the comment above on accessing the lower tank. Did you say you would be building the stand from scratch?
If that is the case, than you can certainly build it with additional space above the lower tank, for proper maintenance. Good Luck.
Bump!

i'm building almost the same thing so i might be able to atleast point you in the right direction. here are some photos of my design that i made on google sketch-up. the top tank is a 96L, 24W, 30H, 300 gallon and the bottom tank is a 48L, 12W, 21H 55 gallon. as you can see the stand is extremely overbuilt (the primary support is 11 4x4's :-P) so that i could cut out spaces as needed for proper access to the lower tank. the front "door" to the lower tank for feeding and so forth is 14" long and 8" tall as well as 14" deep which gives me plently of space for menial tasks such as feeding or taking things in or out. for anything larger the trimming in front of the tank pops off (its connected via magnets :-P) and i can slide the tank out as far as i need to, although some water removal will be necessary. i'll be buidling this literally as soon as i get out of afghanistan in the next couple of weeks so if you like the idea feel free to PM me and i'll help as best as i can.

that design looks great but the bottom tank looks like a pain to deal with hope you are planning on more doors then just that space in the middle

of course. there are two regular cabinet doors up front (you can see them in the pictures but they look like just areas of trim because i couldnt make a door that i liked. and the sides will also have access panels, thats actually the only part of my build i havent finalized yet is whether i want doors on the sides or to have a panel that comes in and out of place.
