Call me crazy but I love Jack Dempseys and have several EBJDs, BGJDs and some Gold Dempseys. I want to shrink down my amount of aquariums to one huge 300 gallon and was wondering how many Dempseys can comfortably live in it without issues? I appreciate any advice!

Sounds like an awesome tank. I would think you could put a good number of them in there. I swam with them in mexico in a cenote, and there were hundreds of them, chasing each other through rocks in an area the size of a large backyard swimming pool. All males might be your best bet, unless you already have females. I could see a breeding pair or two claiming half the tank and throwing a wrench in your plans.
I think you would probably want no less than about 7, to make sure aggression is distributed. I bet duanes duanes would have some good insight on this.

Thank you so much for your time and advice! I’m jealous of the first hand experience in Mexico! That sounds awesome, yeah I do have one established breeding pair already and have 8 total dempseys, the pair in one tank and five in another and a solo Dempsey in his own tank so I’m hoping to provide a lot of territories and cover within the tank so I can get everyone in one big 8 foot tank!

As long as you do regular water changes should be good.
Sounds very do-able to me. Just sandy bottom, lots and lots of rocks to chase each other through. I would also put a bunch of livebearers. That is what they live with in the wild. In the cenote, there were huge shoals of what looked like mollys, but may have been a more obscure Mexican livebearer.

Interesting, I was going to use giant danios or silver dollars as a shoaling, dither fish but mollys sound interesting. Will they eat the livebearers, I know now they don't even try to get my giant danios but they have eaten a few small feeder guppys here and there when they are fed them.

I would not think so if the jacks are fully grown but I have never tried. I do know silver dollars work great though at first they maybe be nibbled at but beyond that I would not say its a concern.
