300 gallon tank weight concerns on floor?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
id use bunch of 4x4 for vertical supports when putting support for floors i think one 4x4 at vertical holds up to 650lbs

I had the same issue with a tank parallel on the joist over a basement. I put two telescoping poles under the tank. Make sure you put the poles in place before you put the tank in place and make sure you bolt the poles to the top and put a piece or two of 2x8 or 2x6 on the bottom to distribute the weight on the concrete.

I had this setup for about three years, no issues with the floor bouncing or anything. I have since moved the tank to the basement, so I don't have them setup anymore.

i personally would finish the basement and set up the tank there.

the house i'm trying to buy in AL has a finished basement with a bedroom, bathroom and den in the basement. i told the boys that i would take the basement and keep my fish there and they can stay in the rest of the house. i'll just come upstairs to cook.

See my thread http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=404814. I am buying a bungalow and am preparing to reinforce the existing floor joists. My tank is going up against a support wall and perpendicular to the joists; however, the joists are only 2x8s and span 15 feet. Also the joists have been notched on the ends by the foundation.
I have decided to completely overkill the problem. I am going to sister 6 joists under the tank with 2x12. I am going to X brace these joists to prevent shaking and to compensate for the notching I am going to install a 2x12 ledger both ends of the joists.
Its a crawlspace I have a framing nailer and I don't want to do any digging.

Oh, he'll be setting up the tank there alright...

This 300 is just his cute little toy.

I think it's worth paying a hundred or two bucks for a consult with a structural engineer. Not because of worry about supporting it enough, but because I think you can do it with less work/fewer jacks than you think, and probably in such a way that you can still design useful space around it without screwing up whatever ideas you have about finishing off the basement around the lake you put in there.

Here's my .02-

I had the same issue with my 300. Parallel to joists. I just bought a 6x6 and centered it under the tank. 2 pole jacks and you're good. Pole jacks are rated at wayyyy more then the tank is even close to. Besides, I bet with a few modifications the cats will love playing on/around the jacks.... ;)

Screw paying someone to tell you the same thing. If you feel the need to throw a few hundy out the window then you can send some my way for the sound advice... LMAO.
