300 marble tank

Good looking marbles, best advice I can give is get them off the black bottom and onto to something white whether it be sand, fine gravel, or frp panel if you really want them to show their true colors. Black bottoms will kill marbles looks and if left too long will almost loose their pattern completely. I always loved the look of that marble/motoro

Ur the second person to give me that same advice so ill have to take it. Theres an 8'x3' sitting right next to this 300 there going in soon without a blk bottom. How long for the blk bottom to be detrimental to their color? I like keeping them dark for the contrast but dont want them to lose color.

FRP paneling will do the trick $36 at lowes. Cut to fit the bottom of the tank, wash it real good and bam you have a white bottom. They also sell it in an almond color.

Part of the issue also is the black back combined with the black bottom. It tends to suck all the light up and make everything dark. Thats why I won't do a black bottom on my new 600. Can't bring my self to do a white bottom though, somewhere in between I think.

Torpedo beach is ordered and on its way...considered frp panel but dont feel like cutting out the spot for the old overflow tower in the middle lol...the pair wont be in the 300 for long but id rather not chance them washing out for the time being. Thanks again for all the compliments guys ive been working hard to improve everything. Ill give some update pics whe the torpedo beach comes in. Im anxious too see how much better theyll look.

Might take 2 to 3 months for their color to change but come back to this thread and give us the before and after pics please.

You don't "need" substrate......

I have black backed tanks, and have great results with blue painted bottoms and white sand, but they move around the sand so much it's usually the blue paint showing.

Natural pool filter sand is ok as well.

It has some to do with what kind of marbling the ray has too......

I've tried lots of stuff.... Dark colors, light colors, white, even orange, and seems it varies a lot depending on the ray itself but seems bright blue (royal sail blue to be exact) has had best overall results....
