Depends, if there is smell in the tank, keep the carbon. Otherwise replace with ceramics

If there is a smell in your tank you have problems that carbon can't fix. Carbon removes chemicals from water. That's it. Chemicals shouldn't be in your tank in the first place and water changes remove chemicals far better. If your tank smells there may not be enough surface agitation.

The tank doesn't smell. I just ran out of ceramic and had a bunch of extra carbon laying around so i threw that in. It was either that or nothing so i went with that.

I would have went with nothing.

nice 300 and fish at that. and I am hearing a lot of good things about the ocean clear canister filters. how hard is it to maintain those filters?

They're probably the easiest filter Ive had to maintain. It takes forever for them to get clogged to the point that the need to be cleaned. I clean it maybe once a month, and it could go longer if needed. And the cartrige is pretty tough and can be reused many times, which is good because they are quite expensive. Im sure a lot of it has to do with the pump used with it. The current set up i have was keeping that tank crystal clear with 8 red bellied piranha in it for the previous owner and there was 0 additional filtration or water flow.
