I'm preparing to set up a new tank, footprint is 96"x24". I'd like a thin layer of white gravel--enough to cover bottom, but not so much where I would need to vacuum. (During watr changes, I'd like to just stur it around a bit, but not vacuum). I'm thinking about 1/2 inch layer would be about right.

So, how much gravel do I need to buy? Thanks. GBG

well I believe to get a 2" bed of gravel on a 300 you would need about 400lbs, so just a rough estimate I'd start with 100-125lbs, and then just go from there...

I used 12-25lb bags

My 240 has 240lbs of gravel and its is about 2 inches deep, Ive always used my own little system to figure out how many lbs i will need, so how ever many gallons you have is how many lbs of gravel you need for about 2 inches deep, if you want 1" deep gravel just cut it in half so for 300 gallons and 1" deep gravel to be safe i would say 200lbs of gravel but you could possibly get away with 150lbs depending on gravel size, hope this helps.

Thanks guys.

There's no question that the footprint of the tank-- not the gallon capacity-- is what drives how much gravel you need. (tall tanks, for example, hold more gallons but don't need more gravel).

Based on the responses, I guess for a 96x24 footprint I'll try about 125 lbs and hope that will get me around 1/2" layer. Thanks again.

start small... try 150 pounds... then you can always add
