However you where off on his measurements, which still isn’t 300, but if you add his sump in the total gallons are 300.

I was concerned once grown would be aggression / space issues , guessing this is true and he was just after money

It could work but there's potential for problems there.
As above stick with less cichlids and it'll be a nicer tank... My 300g is an awful mix of fish from everywhere and I'm currently deciding how to cut it right back to south American only.
You could do;
2 Oscars
Green terror
Ornate pim
Royal pleco
Black ghost knife
6 silver dollars

Your LFS told you that cause they are in the business of selling fish, not necessarily keeping them healthy. (which may be an unfair assessment, a lot of LFSs are owned by very helpful and responsible owners, I digress)
I would suggest a Oscar, a Severum, a school of 6 or so Silver Dollars
other than the jaguar that stock would probably be fine. I think a tank of all SA cichlids and non-cichlid fish like the flagtail, etc. would look better tho
