Ok well, here it goes. I have plans on building a 300g freshwater soon, and I was just thinking on the stocking, so I wanted to know what you guys thought. Here's where I'm at:

  • 15 Clown Loach
  • 100 Cardinal Tetras
  • 6-8 Discus
  • 10 Panda Corydoras
  • Shrimp & Snails

That ssems like a pretty full tank to me:)... let me know what you guys think because I'm still in the research phase. It'll probably be a 300g Marineland DD.

Sounds pretty cool and peaceful, i would add more and different types of cories, is it goin to be planted? I would plant it if i was you

Thanks for the advice, I'll research more types of cories and update it. It will definitely be planted with driftwood :).

i've considered placing some pumps on one end flowing in the other direction as a river probably 2000gph in one direction, do you guys think that would work? i think the tank comes with 4k gph flow through sump or 2k not sure.

What sort of shrimp are you planning on adding?

Coz im guessing unless you get a shrimp colony going first, or have a densely planted tank, your shrimp stock may shrink somewhat quick...

Sounds like its going to be a nice setup. !00 Cardinal sounds like a lot but in a 300g it'll look like 50. You could go 500 Cardinals to the effect your after. Clown loaches will eat up your snails and shrimps possibly. I had one of my 300g setup as a plant tank some 20 years ago. I kept about 20 big Congos with other large Puntius sp. Assorted Australian Rainbow fishes.

Probably red cherry or ghost. I do plan on adding them first to let them build up, and yeah they'll probably shrink but I'm ok with that:). I'm also considering having a 10-20g tank next to the sump where the shrimp can grow until I can net them down and add them to the big tank if its population gets low.

I would love to go to 500 cardinals, but I want to start small and work up if I do that, I love the shoaling effect of those fish. I'm fine with the clown loach eating my snails and shrimp, since I plan on it being heavily planted, i'm guessing a few will survive at least in a tank that large :). Thanks on the info about your tank, i'll look at those fish!

Thats a good idea, get a decent colony going first and they will stand a much better chance, and if you have a spare setup with some in there, you can replace the stock in the 300 as you said :)

Ok guys, I have a few more questions. I am planning on adding some bristlenose plecos, but I have heard 'horror' stories about them deciding to eat the discus's slime coat. Could that work?

I would also like to add some bolivian rams + german blue rams into the aquarium, would those work out ok?

I was suggested (MyGiants), I should add more cardinals to get a better effect, how would that work. my tank has a footprint of 6' by 3'.

Late response to Fat Homer's question from above (post #4), I am planning on mainly red cherry shrimps. Aquabid has groups of 100+ for ~$80 so I could get one group and add it to the tank first or the shrimp aquarium to allow it to safely grow out.

Ok, sorry for all the questions just 4 more :).

1) Would the aquarium bioload be hurt badly if I have say a total of 1,000 red cherry shrimps in their, is that just too much or is that ok. I'm guessing a good portion will be eaten, but I also think a good amount could survive in the really dense plants I'm going for.

2) What type of plants would you recommend to make this seem densely planted. And also do you think 1 centerpiece driftwood + few smaller ones would work? I'm planning on eco-complete, what do you think of that for the substrate?

3) I'm in school and don't have a lot of time for water changes. Recommendations for auto water changes? i plan on using RO/DI water to lower PH since it comes out of my tap in the higher 7's while most of my fish like the mid 6's it seems.

4) I'm planning on having the tank in my room... on the second story :horror: ... however, this tank is above the garage so adding supports shouldn't be to hard. I'm estimating the tank + additional aquariums + sump + substrate/driftwood will be around 2 tons when full. It will be next to two walls, one that separates the bathroom from the room, and the other that is the outside wall. how would you recommend adding supports with minimal costs.

Thats all... thanks ahead to anyone who can help provide answers!
