300g stocking

With the shrimp, if you get a big batch i would separate any pregnant ones and place them in you "safety" tank, and the rest you leave in the main display to slowly build up a colony... Since with a tank that size 100 shrimp wont seem like much :)

-edit-

1000 shrimp wont do too much damage in a planted tank, i've seen 3' tanks with probably close to 2000

I was a contractor and code enforcement officer. Your normal construction cannot support the weight. I also have a 300 and had it set up at one time as you are talking. Too much flow in one direction will exhaust your discus. I did that and the discus would not grow. If you put discus they need/require constant water changes or they will not be healthy and they need a low bio-load to thrive. The load you are talking about above is too much for discus if you do not want to do a 50% water change daily. Discus are high maintenance fish. clown loaches are fantastic but they move to suddenly for discus. Discus are jumpy fish and when they are stressed they develop issues like later line disease and wasting. The cardinals are fantastic with discus as are a few of the high temp cories. Remember discus require a minimum of 82 degrees but do really well at 86. There are a few swords that will tolerate the high temps and the standby Anubis family. Bog would is a must with java fern. Remember Discus do not like bright light, it will stress them so there is no need for Co2. the shrimp will be eaten by the discus. My 5-8 inch clowns ignore mine

Thanks for the advice about leaving the females in the 'safe' tank, I'll definitely do that!

Yeah I understand that my floor will not hold it and that I'll have to reinforce it. What do you mean by too much flow in one direction? Discus come from the amazon so I'm guessing their used to flow from one direction? I understand that discus need great water, and daily water changes will help... I'm planning on making an automatic water change system so I can easily change 30% in 20 minutes, which will make water changes simple. It won't be fully automatic, but it'll just require me flipping some switches here and there:). I've heard of countless people keeping clown loaches w/ discus sucessfully. The temp will prob be ~80, and I'm fine with discus eating shrimp. thanks for the advice.

I would love to go to 500 cardinals, but I want to start small and work up if I do that, I love the shoaling effect of those fish. I'm fine with the clown loach eating my snails and shrimp, since I plan on it being heavily planted, i'm guessing a few will survive at least in a tank that large :). Thanks on the info about your tank, i'll look at those fish!

Actually it wasn't 20 years ago lol it was 12 years ago. This made me want to go find the old video I took of the tank. I played it on my TV then recorded it with my digital camera off the TV so its a little weird. I didn't see my Rainbows must of added them later cause I know I had them. But I didn't remember having Bala Sharks anyways here an old short clip of my 300 plant tank

I don't like the idea of keeping cory cats with clown loaches.. The loaches are much more aggressive when it comes to food and eventually will become huge. The corys will have a hard time.

Sorry MyGiants but the video isn't working:(.

Does the first vid still not work..

I found the video with my Rainbows I also had Cardinal Tetras. Its been so long ago I didn't remember I had them earlier in 1998.
