That is my worst nightmare! Sorry that happened, I hope your goldies were okay.

Did you re-silicone the tank before you set it up?

I didnt quite realize blowouts were that common..... my 125 was used and pretty rough, so i did a quick resilicone, nothing really structural tho. makes you think twice, have a gooooood look at all them seams, haha jeeze that would suck!

Blowouts aren't common at all. I've had only 4 leakers and 2 blowouts in nearly 46 years of keeping fish. Both blowouts happened after moving from state to state and the tanks were over 10 years old. The last blowout was one of over 100 tanks that were moved from WA state to MS. The leakers were all DIY tanks with alot of years on them. One was 17 years old when it developed a leak and had moved coast to coast twice before leaking. All the leakers were easily repaired.

Semagic 1.7.3.3U - Warning: This Pirate May Contain Snark (frankthepirate) @ livejournal.comI suddenly feel lucky! my 700ltr was second hand and had to be moved carefully down 4 floors of small stairs, then set up asap because the moron who bought the fish never collected them, even though he paid for them, so the owner was stuck with them in large buckets and barrels. He said since they were paid for and the man had no intention to collect I could have them or they could stay in the bucket and die :/ I ended up with a bucket of plecs and synos, Ellie my late Poly, an oscar from hell, 2 pacu and 3 pangasius! Nightmare! Took us over 18 months to get the pacu to a good home!!! Everyone thought that 2x 2 foot fish would fit FINE in their 4 FOOT tanks!! arg. They hardly fit in our 6.5x2x2 and had been living in it with all those other fish for a good 2 years before I bought the tank.

I was so worried about coming down and finding water and fish everywhere for a good 6 months. I like to put every tank - new or used - in the back yard with food coloured water and check for leaks. There was just no time to do anything but check all the edges and hope for the best! Next year I think I will drain it and re-seal it just to be sure though, it worries me - but was a custom job for the first owner, and done quite well (loads of sealant and nice thick glass) but yeah.. blowouts still worry me. Every time I hear a slight noise I am at that tank looking it over, and as a rule nothing we can't live without gets put on the floor in our house LOL. I know I am paranoid though :P

You need to fill and test used tanks in a safe area for a few days before setting up.
