300ish Gallon plywood - First attempt

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Looking good!

Ok a bit more done today.

Got the sides on. They are 1/4" Birch plywood. The face is 1/2" Birch plywood. The first piece of lumber I've had to purchase that wasn't here on hand. Attached the 1" MDF top deck. All of this was put together with wood glue and 1 1/4" or 2 1/2" screws.

At the moment just getting the stand together. Need to get some 3/4" Birch Plywood for the tank later this week.

I'm looking at using a product from Insul-X that is a swimming pool paint. At $40 a gallon it looks a better option then Pond Armor. But if I find that this paint will not work then I will go with the Pond Armor after I rob a small bank to cover the cost of it.

If anyone has any information on this for Aquarium use please let me know before I go calling the reps next week.

That concludes this evenings update.

Ok back to the stand this morning. About to cut out the door openings on the front. Putty up my holes and possibly get a coat of paint on this thing today.

I dunno about resorces. Working with leftovers makes it much harder to do properly.

I just found a local supplier for the Insul-X pool paint. They have the rubber based one that I was looking at that is about 40 a gallon.

They also have the Epoxy based 2 part kit in stock but it is about 110 for that. I'm wondering which would be a better option. The Epoxy kit is USDA approved!

p.s. I still love your avatar kallmond.

Ok a bit more while I wait for the wood putty to dry enough to sand.

A little bit of jigsaw work and we get one cutout.

Now add some doors.

And putty up my holes.

After the putty is dry. I'm gonna sand them down flat and it's time for a coat of paint on this bad boy. Looks like I'm gonna have to set up a tent or something in the back bay of my shop to heat it up a little. It's currently 50* in the shop which makes for paint drying VERY slowly.

Alright. after a bit of cleaning an rearranging I moved the stand to the other side of the shop for a coat of paint.

The paint I'm using on the stand and outside of the tank is designed to waterproof decks. It's water and UV resistant. Here's the fun part. I was at ACE hardware for something else and saw it sitting in the mismixed pile. Which any can in the mismix section is only 8 bucks. It stated out as a light gray. I had them darken it a bit which gives me a kinda slate gray color. I like the look of it.

To make myself feel better about the cost of paint I went down the isle and found the retail price on the stuff. It's normally about $35 a can. I got it for $8. Can't beat that.

Here it is in all it's painted glory
