300w heater for 300G?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It all depends on the room. Some people don't even need Heaters but I use my 300watt titanium for the winter only. Keeps my temp at 82* because it has a temp sensor. Usually winter brings my temp down to 72-4*

Should I add another heater to take the load off the existing heaters and by doing so will this reduce my monthly electrical bill? I have a bare substrate 240G acrylic 96x24x24 freshwater 1x arow jar @ 14" and 15 x clown loaches @ 2.5"-4" set at 80.2-80.5F using 2x hydor ETH 300w heaters plumbed via 2x eheim 2028 supplemented by 2 x 2217 eheims. Temps monitored using several digital thermometers positioned 2x in-tank submerged steady at 80.5F from both left and right side, 2x in-tank (left and right ) above tank water @ 78F and 1x external off-tank for room temp ambient at 67F. Random monitoring of the 2 x hydors 300 ETH shows both heaters operating on heating status (red indicator light lit) between 65-70% of the time.

a watt is a watt adding a heater will not reduce bill but will have a minor increase do to just having another device plugged in and wasted energy on off cycle

Quite allot of good advice given.
Certainly, you need to consider the temperature of the tanks surroundings.
Too large a heater causes it to continually cycle on and off. This is the major cause of heater failure. The contacts in these things are very small and work much better, reliably if there is a minimum of opening and closing.
For me, given the normal room temperature, I only need 1 watt per gallon.
