Good night everybody, I have in project to start a marine aquarium and I thought I would like to get around 4-6 fish of the same specie (school), for a 30g-50g Cube (30g) or regular rectange (50g).

Any idea of some good looking species and also which aquarium would be the best?

I had some good ideas but i forgot to take the names in note :c

Thank you for your time :)

Possibly the PJ cardinals? or the Bengai cardinals? Also if going for a "school" then you will probably want to go with the 50.

i love the bengai cardinals but would like something more colorful if it is possible, i was thinking the 50g aswell. The cube was more appropriate for my other idea which is a reef cube. I'm more attracted by the fishes than the corals though.

Well Pajama Cardinals (sometimes known as spotted) have more colour. I would say you could go with Anthias, but I cant think of any off the top of my head that are recomended for a 50, but if you can find one just make sure you have a proper heram, as they wont get along if the sexes are mixed wrong (usuallly one male with 2-5 females should work but it may differ between verieties). In theory you can have multiple firefish or dartfish but you have to be careful to add them all at the same time and at the same size, even then they can have issues.

Ok well i don't really like the idea of your second proposition as i don't want any trouble between the group, i understand that some species live with one male for multiple females or vice-versa, which is fine.

I really love the occelaris clownfish, is it possible to house more than two in the same aquarium? I heard it is possible but i can't remember where I got that info.

I agree with kevin that dartfish are all that i see that will "school". The problem I've encountered is that fish school in the beginning when they're nervous but after awhile they do not. Even the anthias i've seen in LARGE tanks are separate. I really don't think it is possible to have schools in anything less than a 700 gallon because eventually the fish split. I've had 5 chromis for about 3 months now that schooled but they are starting to split and get aggressive with each other. one has jumped while another just disappeared. Maybe you can go with a few fish of different colors which look good. Dwarf angels are beautiful fish as long as they don't fight and kill each other. As for clowns you cannot have more than 2. You maybe lucky and have it work for a long time but long term I have not seen it happen. They eventually pair off and beat up the odd ones out.

Just a recommendation I have a royal gramma in my 40 and he is really my favorite fish. Beautiful and great personality. Good luck with this tank. Salt will not disappoint! :)

ok thank you for your answers, I'll probably forget the school idea since I don't have the space, or the experience for a 700 gallons yet ^^. I will keep looking around until i find something that really get me interested or end up with multiple species. I doubt this project will take form soon but if it does i will come post my choices :)

Edit: Would it be possible to keep a few butterflyfish together? If yes, which species could i keep and if not, what dimensions would i need to keep the smallest ones for life? (I find them all beautiful anyway)
I was just looking around on this site : http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/aquarium-fish-supplies.cfm?c=15+25

Second edit: I'm off to bed so if anyone post on this thread I won't be able to answer until tomorrow night or Thursday. Good night MFK;)

Good question.... generally I would say no, you cant keep multiple butterflyfish together... BUT that said... people say the same thing about tangs... and yet I see it done all the time with tangs... It mite be possible, assuming they all are the same size when added, and all have more or less the same adult size... but still no guarentees on that.

You definitely can't keep multiple butterflies in a 30-50 gallon. I don't think there is a single Butterfly you can keep in a tank that small. Quite honestly, there is nothing you can keep in a small tank that will school or even coexist. Cardinals will kill each other off until all that remains is a breeding pair. (I know much of this was already said)

If I was you, I would just look to get 4 or so different fish that you like for this tank.

^^^ he makes a good point, all the systems I was reffering to that had coexisting tangs where well over 100 gallons... that also said a good number of butterflyfish can be housed in a 50, just not likely together. I don't know what i was thinking... must of been half asleep still lol.
