30g-50g F.O tank

Hi everyone, i was just about to forget the school fish idea when i learned about green chromis and i wondered what would be the minimal or the ideal tank size or measures for about 4-6 chromis? I saw a bunch in less than a 50g at MY LFS but again.... thats a LFS and from experience (not mine, but what i have read :p) they are not always giving their fishes an adequate tank size.

Edit: could someone tell what are the most popular/beautiful/hardy species of chormis, because the only thing I managed to find were green chromis. I like their colors!

Cool, is there a rule like x chromis per inch (length) that i need to respect? Also, do you know if there is "best" number for a school? And finally, do i need like, 1 female for x males or it doesnt matter?

Thank you for your time everyone who have spent time answering me :)

From things I've read, its unlikely you ever obtain a true school, let alone a shoal (which I probably should have mentioned earlier) but you should be able to get decent interation with certain fish, (the ones mentioned and other BIG fish). For chromis, you should probaly have upwards of 5, and no there is no rules for length to volume ratio, and if you hear otherwise its a load of plop, fish have different waste output, different space needs etc. so its hard to judge whats appropriat numbers wise. Generally speaking, in nature, schools are upwards of hundreds of fish, and only happen at certain times, (mating, migration that type of thing), and shoals can be thousands or more fish, are always together and move in perfect unison. Both of these are all but impossible to mimic in a tank at home. SO the best you can hope for is interactions between eachother, and the beauty of multiple identical fish darting in and out and around each other. Essentially the key is to have enough, that agression shouldn't be a problem, even if they start to pair up, that said, IF they start to pair up it can still be a problem (as someone has mentioned already), but nothing is ever certain in the world of life, for example you could have a super agressive clown tang (rather normal actually), but you could actually have a polite one that doesnt bother any other fish.

since they pair up, shouldnt i get like 6 or 8 so nobody is left alone? if i get decide to go for chromis ill most likely only get these guys and maybe a red shrimp (not too sure about the real name for these little guys im just using my imagination right now lol) I would probably get a 40g either 48x13x16 or 36x18x17

Edit: is the green chromis the only specie that is worth mentioning? (Im currently trying to find other kinds of chromis that could fit in a 40g tank)

Well idealy yes... but your chances of getting 50/50 male/female is unlikely.
There are a handful of other chromis that are nice... but harder to find. Blues aren't bad, but you have to make sure your actually getting a blue chromis not a damsle (very similar), there is one that looks like a green, but has a thin orange or yellow stripe running down its side. Only ones I can think of off the top of my head, as most chromis (IMO) are dull.
