30g Test: AquaClear 30 vs. Penguin 150 Bio-Wheel

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have a pengein 150 biowheel on a 10g and it pumps really good but for no reason it will just stop out of nowhere.. it might be better on a 30g.

Get an Aqueon.

They're generally cheaper, and i like them better than AC's.

Never had a Biowheel though.

Besides the price...

What else is good about the Aqueon? or what do you like better on the Aqueon instead of the AC?

I'm not trying to change your mind I am just curious.

AC all the way. No filter cartridges. more versatile too.

totally aqua clear, i have 2 ac110s on my 150 with a xp4, and 2 ac 70s on my 100 with a xp1, love them, never had any trouble and some of them are going on 3 years right now. for the money they are the best

I've got an AC110 and an AC50. The 50 is silent, but it is a teeny little filter. It's on a community 29 and seems to do okay though, along with a powerhead.

The 110 is noisier but very large and works great. I have a few layers of filter floss on top of the sponge, and the bag of biomedia on top of that.

I also have a penguin 200, not impressed. It works, but the cartridges are inferior and the biowheel is poorly designed. It makes noise regardless of how high the tank is filled.

I used to run AC70's (then called AquaClear 300's) on my 30g tanks

perfect size.

I have always felt that all the AC's under the 110 were way undersized for their rated tanks..

eg. I would never put a single AC70 on a 50g, never mind a 70 or 75..

I used to run an AC50 on a 10 gallon. seriously.

worked great.
I agree my 20 gallon has an ac50 and a sponge filter.

my 20 gallon has an AC50 and an AC 20. (Soon to be running two AC 50s)

and I have an AC 30 on a 14 gallon.

I have an AC30 on a 20 high and it works perfectly. I get some crud on the sand from time to time (and about 99.9% of it is from the 2 bristlenose plecos), but water parameters are perfect. The design is much better than the Penguin 150 it replaced. That thing was garbage- cartridges would clog & water would bypass the filter almost immediately after installing them. On top of that, all the talk about a biowheel is a joke. My biowheel would quit turning for no reason, and my parameters wouldn't change. All of the bacteria necessary was housed in the filter cartridges & items in the tank. Even when the biowheel did work, every time I'd change a filter cartridge my parameters would start changing. That tells me there was next to nothing on that biowheel.

I run my AC30 with just a sponge & the biomax. I want to pick up a second sponge for it, but as of right now, I haven't found it necessary.

I have 2 Emperor 400s and a AC110 on my 125gal and not really happy with any of them. I'm looking to change to something else.
