They generally overflow near the intake, yes, however, I have had HOBs overflow onto the floor. Never a ton, more of a drip onto the floor, but it still makes a mess. And anything overflowing from ANYWHERE is bypassing media. And sure there are DIY methods (I hardly ever change out filter cartridges- every few months and that's it), but there are DIY methods that make canisters work better, too. And I didn't say it's a HIGH risk, just that I do worry about it from time to time.
 
the only downside on my part is i have npo clue how a canister filter works or even how to set one upso for now i have a HOB on it until i figure out a better method of tank filtration
 
I'm one of those weirdos that has bunches and bunches of fish tanks... and most of my tanks have HOBs (Aqua Clears) on them... and I've only had one HOB leak and that's because I dropped something behind the tank and it cracked the filter box... and this is 100% user error that I cannot blame on the filter at all...

"Upgrading" to a canister at some point is always an option, but do not be concerned with using an HOB.
