30gal firemouth

plan on setting up a 30gal planted fm tank, how many can i put in a 30?
in a heavily planted tank will they pull up on the plants? My tex rips up random plants in my 75, i also have a little fm in there that will go to the 30 but i dont know if he pulls up plants too.
and lastly if i throw in some ghost shrimp to take care of any algae issues will they eat the shrimp?

you're gona get mixed answers on this one for sure.

IMO, having kept FM's and keeping one now...they shouldn't be in a tank that small for life. As a grow out they'll be ok for a while but I'd go with a 40-45 or bigger for a pair. Longer is better as most cichlids are medium to bottom of the tank type fish. They'll appreciate length, or width much more than height.

If you're open to suggestions I just put Red Jewel cichlids in my 30 and they're doing great. Might want to look at them?

IME my FM's haven't bothered any of my plants but I have mostly Anubias now and I stick the Rhizome into a crack in my large pieces of wood. They can't dig it out and they leave it alone. have had good luck with amazon sword too but I find a rock with a hole through it and push the roots through them bury them in the gravel. This keeps them protected from digging too.

how big for a breeding pair, and how can u tell the differace between male and female
 
id say 40 - 50 gallons.... they do get big and like everyones said they will fit for a while ut will need something bigger
 
40 long is perfect for a pair i had them awhile back.The one thing about firemouths is they get bigger than most think same with salvinis my pet store had both full grown and i coudnt believe how big they were def wouldnt fit in a 30.
 
you can sex firemouth by the shape of their dorsal fin if its shorter and rounded off then its mostlikey female but if it has a long pointed dorsal then its a male...and if you think ghost shrimps will survive then u got another thing coming.unless they are actually ghosts :P
