Simmer down now :grinno:

Klmt: Nice Whitetail bud! I got 2 this year

Back to the 30. Too small for adult FM's period. You can argue this till you're blue in the gills :D, but once you see two adults in a 35-36" long tank you're gona say they told you so, and regret it. Another good reason not to do it is because the smaller the tank the faster your water goes to crap. Go bigger, you'll have better, more consistent water chemistry, more room for your fish, and they'll look better as a result.

If you're shying away from FM's in a 30, Which is a good idea IMO, you might want to try red Jewels. Yes they're Africans but don't get quite as big and a 30 is the perfect size for a breeding pair. I've kept German Blue Rams in my 30 and they do have the personality of larger cichlids, but are so finicky and fragile that they were "high maintenance" type fish. I prefer the Red Jewels, but have only had mine 2 months. Still trying to establish a pair, but they look great. Check em out

We all want to see you succeed, and It's great to ask these questions. If you read up online about FM's they don't usually suggest 30 gallon tanks. Think it through, and I'm confident you'll make the right decision

And IMO don't listen to Convict Breeder's advice. He's young and has A LOT to learn, and should be practicing his spelling along with his fishkeeping by the looks of it. Read through any of the 500+ "sex my firemouth" threads and you'll see this too. :grinno: Sorry , but thats my take on it

personaly, a 30 would be fine for a pair of FM, they rarely get 5"+, its wierd that people say a 55 for a pair when others say a 55 will do a pair of jack dempseys!!!which are nearly twice as big!!! BUT bigger is always better:)

this is a 30 gal breeder tank 36x18x12h i think alot of people are getting mixed up with a regular 30. This should be fine for a pair for the time being if my fm ever really get even 6" i got my 75 but again i never seen a fm get around 5"+ . thanks alot every one for your opinions and the info i just got the tank in and im going to start the cycling process i will update with pics soon:headbang2:headbang2

Two firemouths would not work in a 30 gallon for life a 40 long would be perfect as would a 40 gallon. One FM would work, and you could put 2 kribs in there too maybe. CB you dont need to give stocking advice I'm sorry I had to be that blunt, but its the truth:(

i dont see why not. i have 2 6 inch jags in a 30 breeder. there getting ready to spawn then they go back to the 125 but while there in there temporarily they seem to be very happy. 1 40 percent water change every 7-10 days. i dont think you would have a problem at all with a 30 long.

your breeding jewels in a 30? to me thats a waste of tank space for 2 litlle africans. i bred my red jewels in a 10 gallon about 7 times. sold the first 4 batches fed the others to my fish and got rid of the jewels.

are you serious? a 30g breeder would not only work, it would be much better for FMs than any 40g. footprint/area/real estate are much more imprtant with FMs.:D
30 breeder=660.421875 square inches of footprint.
40 long=615.1875 square inches.

I did not know it was a 30g breeder, i thought it was a regular 30 i.e. 29. The footprint of the 30 breeder is big enough.

my 30breeder is setup my only problem now is my fm or should i say fragile mouths i got two from my lfs to add with my main fm from my 75gal the two new guys are stressed out for some reason. one of them his/her tail fin is almost gone! i added melafix and started treatment. i had them for over a week now i guess ill wait and see how the treatment works out
